It’s Time To Make A Difference

Weew! What a busy day. I graduated. I finally graduated.

The happiness I have equals all the pain I had to get this degree. There is nothing better than seeing your friends next to you on one of the most important days in your life. I can’t express how grateful I am to have all the people I saw today. Happy for me; happy with me.

It all started with a phone call five years ago from my mom telling me that I got accepted for college in Aleppo University; that was one of the most significant moments in my life. I knew I made it to the next level – the college, in which I started forming my passion that will ultimately form my life’s work and contributions.

Throughout my three years of undergraduate studies, I was able to meet many great friends with which I had so much fun. We literally lived together, studied together, and dreamed together. (We lived such a great life. It was just great and full of fun.

This “state of my undergraduate studies,” however, changed once I put my first step in Chicago. That’s when life showed me the other face of opportunities and possibilities – and obligations.

At Illinois Institute of Technology I met a lot of Syrians. A lot of great Syrians, I met a new kind of Syrians that I never met back home.

It’s great to meet and get to know people who are completely different than you. I also met a lot of other people – from Chicago and across the globe who are great.

I love the diversity that IIT has. I love all the people in my new life. I love everyone who made me the way I am now.

I give this gift to my Mom for EVERYTHING she has done to get me here. I give this to my Dad who unfortunately hasn’t lived long enough to see me graduating, to make him proud of me, as he has always been. I give it to my lovely brothers who gave me their advice when I needed it. I give this gift to everyone else who they know they are my best friends….

It hasn’t been easy, it has been full with surprises, obstacles, challenges, and more importantly SUPPORT. The life of making change has begun!

IT’S TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE MY FAMILY PROUD.

IT’S TIME TO MAKE IIT PROUD.

AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT’S TIME TO MAKE MY COUNTRY OF SYRIA – PROUD!
