It was a beautiful sunny morning when we set off to the Eden Place today. We were one of the many groups volunteering at the IIT fifth annual big event and were excited to see how the rest of the day is going to be like. When we first got there, we had no idea about the story that lies behind this amazing place. It’s a nature center, that’s all we knew.
When we arrived there, there were kids laughing as they were learning about the environment and a couple of women preparing the soil for plants. Within a few minutes, Mr. Michael Howard and his wife, the founders of the Eden Place told us how this natural preserve has evolved from an illegal dumpster where all the neighbors would just come and throw their trash into this nature preserve and environmental learning center that offers classes and programs to the surrounding community. The Howards were previously attacked by the neighborhood gangsters for trying to make their community a better place for everyone to live in. This, however, did not stop them from moving forward with their projects. They keep hosting classes and celebrations at the Eden Place and there’s also something educational and entertaining going on over there. Seeing how this place has turned out to be, all I can say is that they have done a great job.
Throughout this day we helped the Howards with the instrument preparation and the sterilization at the green house. Everyone was nice, helpful and willing to get their hands dirty! The time passed by incredibly fast. It felt great to be a part of the work of these amazing people!
